Thanks again for offering to speak at Staffs Web Meetup!
We’re a meetup group based in Stafford with an average attendance of between 40-50 people.
The group meets every third Wednesday of the month (though we do take a break in December).
We invite people to join us at Bean enCounter from 18:00. The Bean enCoutner put out a buffet-style spread. There is general chit-chat and networking until around 19:00 when we kick off the talks.
The format often varies. We usually publish a running order on Meetup a week or so before the evening. Feel free to ask if you have any uncertainty.
Unless we’ve discussed a longer talk, a lightning talk should last no longer than ten minutes. A lightning talk is designed to give a brief introduction to a topic.
People have trains to catch, so we need to finish on time. We suggest doing a number of practice runs to suss out your talk’s timing. You’ll be surprised how quickly that time will go!
We allow time at the end of each talk for a few questions. While it’s usually very relaxed, if we are running behind, we may have to cut the questions and instead invite people to chat during the break.
We have a projector, a laptop and a slide clicker.
Our projector’s aspect ratio is 4:3. If you have slides, can you send them to us as soon as possible. Sending us your slides means we can avoid fumbling around switching laptops over. We’re running macOS and have Keynote and Adobe Acrobat.
If you are planning on using your own laptop (for a live demo etc), can you let us know, so we can be prepared. The projector connects through VGA. We have a VGA cable, as well as a Lightning cable adapter available for you to use.
While there is WiFi at Bean enCounter, it can be patchy. If your slides are online, it’s probably a good idea to have an offline backup, just in case.
We have a mic and speaker for the benefit of those who’re hard of hearing, as well as the people at the back. We recommend speaking around six inches away from the microphone. To allow you to hold a slide clicker and control the laptop, the mic is setup on a stand. However, you’re welcome to hold the mic if you prefer.
The meetup is held at Bean enCounter, an independent coffee shop in Stafford. The address is:
There is plenty of parking available around Stafford. We recommend Broad Street, next to Wilko, which is operated by the Council and is free after 6pm. Alternatively, there is lots of street parking on Eastgate Street and the surrounding areas which is also free after 6pm.
Travelling by train
The Bean enCounter is a short, 10 minute walk from Stafford’s train station. If you’d prefer, we can meet you at the station and walk you over, just let us know so we can make the necessary arrangements.
If you are coming by train, it’d be worth checking when your last train home is. Let us know if this is a concern for you, we can schedule you in earlier to avoid any hassle around catching the last train home!
Thanks to our sponsors, we have a limited budget available to cover speaker travel. If you’d like your travel reimbursing, just let us know and we’ll arrange a bank transfer.
