Speaker Information

Thanks again for offering to speak at Staffs Web Meetup!

We’re a meetup group based in Stafford with an average attendance of between 35-40 people.

The group meets every third Wednesday of the month (though we do take a break in December).

We invite people to join us at Entrust from 18:00. We order in food, usually a selection of pizza, with options for both vegetarians and vegans. There is general chit-chat and networking until around 19:00 when we kick off the talks.

Running order

The format often varies. We usually publish a running order on Meetup a week or so before the evening. Feel free to ask if you have any uncertainty.

Unless we’ve discussed a longer talk, a lightning talk should last no longer than ten minutes. A lightning talk is designed to give a brief introduction to a topic.

Our booking with the venue means we need to finish on-time. We suggest doing a number of practice runs to suss out your talk’s timing. You’ll be surprised how quickly that time will go!

Taking questions

We allow time at the end of each talk for a few questions. While it’s usually very relaxed, if we are running behind, we may have to cut the questions and instead invite people to chat during the break.

We have a projector, a laptop and a slide clicker.

Unfortunately, the room’s projector is fairly antiquated. It has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and an abysmal resolution of 800×600. While no problem for slides, bear in mind how that might affect you if you plan on live coding or running a demo.

If you have slides, can you send them to us as soon as possible. Sending us your slides means we can avoid fumbling around switching laptops over. We’re running macOS and have Keynote and Adobe Acrobat.

If you are planning on using your own laptop (for a live demo etc), can you let us know, so we can be prepared. The projector connects with a HDMI cable. We have both VGA and USB-C to HDMI adapters available.

There is free WiFi at Entrust. It does require you to complete a simple registration form when you first connect.

The meetup is held at Entrust. The address is:

Entrust has ample free on-site parking.

Travelling by train

Entrust is walkable from Stafford’s train station. Alternatively, there is a taxi rank outside of the station; turn left upon exiting the main entrance.

It’s worth checking the time of your last train home. Let us know if this is a concern for you, we can schedule you in earlier to avoid any hassle!

Travel expenses

Thanks to our sponsors, we have a limited budget available to cover speaker travel. If you’d like your travel reimbursing, just let us know and we’ll arrange a bank transfer.
